Antônio Pimenta Alley
Old narrow path that connects the Church square to the Pimentas street, which gives access to the road that leads to the main Itabirito.
It has remnants of stone paving on the floor and flanked stone walls. It also features sections with new paving and walls. This alley deserves attention in order not to allow its mischaracterization by some local residents.
It presents a strong angle in its course that does not allow to see it in its entirety. Marked by dry stone walls that delimit the backyards, its surroundings are framed by exuberant vegetation, with an emphasis on centenary jabuticaba trees. There are remnants of the original cladding in stone blocks in the highest level area near the access to the Church square. Possibly it would be covered only in this section. It is 132m long. It has several names besides Antônio Pimenta Alley, among which are Virgins Alleys and Dodô’s Alley.
Narrativa
During Carnival, some men would go out dressed as virgins parading down this alley, giving the old path its name, according to Mr. Jaber Damasceno, 79 years old, resident of São Gonçalo do Bação.
According to Ms. Divina do Espírito Santo, 94 years old, in the 19th century, there was a ranch or inn for herdsmen made up of stone walls, located on the corner of the square between Largo da Matriz and Beco Antônio Pimenta.
Note: it is possible to identify remaining foundations at the site.
