History
Located 16 km from Itabirito, São Gonçalo do Bação is situated on top of a hill, with Pico de Itabirito to the north The village emerged in the 18th century, during the Gold Cycle, and later became a route for drovers who traveled from Vila Rica to other places. The district immortalizes and preserves its history, culture and traditions through stagings by the São Gonçalo do Bação Theater Group. In addition to the waterfalls, spouts, houses, the Igreja Matriz and the chapel of Rosário make up the beautiful landscape of the district.
By 1830, São Gonçalo do Bação had approximately 14 commercial establishments according to the Administrative Scientific and Literary Industrial Almanac of Ouro Preto. With the change in the mining axis from gold to iron ore, which was extracted and processed in Itabirito, the district suffered a significant decline in its activities and population.
In the 1970s, it attracts interest as a summer area (weekends), what changed its reality in a very significant wya, such as real estate speculation, change in economic dynamics, resizing of urban space, cultural interaction and de-characterization of historical heritage.
The fountains are reminiscent of the historical process, in addition to being a community asset and a strong tourist attraction
