Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary and Cemetery

Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary and Cemetery

In 1901, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário was built in masonry in the place where there was a wooden chapel and, in 1902, the cemetery, which was around the Church of São Gonçalo, was transferred to this place. (Mauro Antônio de Souza)

It is a cemetery chapel, located at the highest point of the district. Built in the early 20th century, it adopted the architectural style of colonial architecture. It is located in the western part of the district, facing east. Located inside the cemetery, which is delimited by stone walls, it has a wooden structure to support the bell (which is not found on the site), on the right side considering the observer outside the cemetery. Its architectural design consists of a nave and a sacristy. The construction system used is ceramic bricks covered in “plan” ceramic tiles. The main façade is composed by a central main span flanked by tall windows in lintels finished over lintels and sills with a framed profile. The roof’s pediment has a very elaborate finish in profile with volutes, the ends with pinnacles, a central oculus with friezes in the form of rays. The main altar is made up of a panel with very simple paintings. It has a projected area of 87.46m², bathrooms under construction, of 7.14m². The cemetery has tombs built by José Vitor, who is buried there.

Narrativa

“Place where residents and devotees of the Rosary would gather and pray. There was a lot of religiosity back then in the chapel. It also has an old cemetery with some very beautiful tombs and a stone wall.”

Lady Lia, 99 years old, resident of São Gonçalo do Bação

Assessment of the state of conservation/date/suggestions

It is currently under construction with the construction of two toilets attached to the rear façade. It has been vandalized and has little use. It shows signs of rainwater infiltration. It received reforms that mischaracterized it, mainly with regard to the frames and the roof, which had its ridge point lowered. This resulted in the lowering of the internal ceiling that today intercepts the main altar's original panel.

Registration in other heritage and environmental bodies
